Rattlesnake
by Frederic Remington 1905

The 7/28/ 2014 Coeur d’Alene Art Auction one of the original FREDERIC REMINGTON (1861–1909)The Rattlesnake #53 bronze, 22 inches high Sold at Auction: $380,250. Rattlesnake Sculpture by Frederic Remington depicts a cowboy riding a bucking horse. His left hand tightly grips the reigns, while his right hand holds his trusty hat to his head.

This sculpture is truly a sight to see, and brings a piece of the old west directly into your home or outdoor garden. Due to it's design, it makes a wonderful centerpiece and is impressive when viewed from any angle. Perhaps Remington himself experienced this sort of jolting surprise, and thus was able to effectively convey in the horse and rider the surprise which reacts in comparison to the tension effect of a coiled spring.

Remington first sculpted "The Rattlesnake" in 1904 and it is considered one of his best sculptures, showing the fluid movement of the bucking horse and rider. This model presented a challenge to show the horse up on two legs twisting and recoiling from the dangerous snake at its feet. The cowboy is equally startled and is almost caught off balance, grabbing his hat while trying to stay on his horse.

A powerful composition, it focuses all attention and movement to the small but deadly rattlesnake. The Rattlesnake won much praise when it was completed and was called the work of a master's hand. It was Remington's 12th sculpture and went on to become one of his most popular works in bronze.

It tells a dramatic story of life in the old West. This statue is reproduced in solid bronze, cast in a brown patina and then hand-rubbed to bring out detail and highlights.

The statue is then mounted on a marble base with an etched brass plate. This 100 % American Handmade Bronze is cast in the traditional "Lost Wax Casting" process. This statue is reproduced in 100% American solid bronze, hand applied patina finishes and hand-rubbed to bring out the awesome detail and highlights, making a unique and lasting sculpture that is an original work of art.

This renders that no two statues are exactly alike. The statue is then mounted on a beautiful marble base with an etched brass plate. Freight is included in the price of this piece.

Rattlesnake By Remington1905 The 7/28/ 2014 Coeur d’Alene Art Auction one of the original FREDERIC REMINGTON (1861–1909)The Rattlesnake #53 bronze, 22 inches high Sold at Auction: $380,250. A rattlesnake and antelope had once been a subject of Remington’s art in a Harper’s Weekly pen and ink, thus indicating Remington’s intrigue of how larger animals react in common to a rattlesnake. Perhaps Remington himself experienced this sort of jolting surprise, and thus was able to effectively convey in the horse and rider the surprise which reacts in comparison to the tension effect of a coiled spring. The Rattlesnake was copyrighted in 1905. Remington enjoyed modeling this piece so thoroughly, that after it was finished, he completely reworked it over a ten day period. The new piece was nearly four inches taller than the original version, and the position of the out lines was also greatly altered. The head, neck and back legs of the horse, and the angle of the cowboys body, now flowed in a more pronounced arching motion. He recorded in his diary,” It has taken much longer to model than I had any idea of but it is a good job and a good bronze, well worth while”. This piece is Remington’s third most popular sculpture ever, probably due to the fact it adds the elements of the fashionable bronco with those of a close encounter with death. One of Remington’s acquaintances Charles Frances Roe, once a Calvary officer, related to him that “The best thing I’ve ever seen (referring to the sculpture). I had a horse bitten by a rattle snake near the Custer battle field (Little Big Horn) while I was on his back…” Remington went on to tell his founder Riccardo Bertelli; how he could’ve spent days just positioning the snake on the base of the sculpture, and the only thing limiting him was his time and patience. He cast the piece at Roman Bronze Works the very next morning after finishing it. The Rattlesnake is another popular Frederic Remington bronze. Whether you are purchasing this as a gift or for home/ office décor it is sure to be a favorite. Artist: Fredrick Remington was born in Canton, New York October 4, 1861. He was brought up during the Civil War, his boyhood passions consisted of riding, boating, fishing, hunting, the military and the great outdoors. During school he enjoyed sketching and doodling different objects especially soldiers in military uniforms. As a young adult Remington tried many different avenues of interest. He tried college, and dropped out in 1880 when his father died of an abrupt illness. Then he ventured out into the business world, but most of these government and business endeavors only lasted a few months. In the summer of 1879 he met and began wooing Eva Adele Caten, and in the fall of 1884 they were married. The couple tried the wearying Western frontier life for a time but quickly opted to move to the city of Brooklyn, New York. Due to some bad dealings in business and difficulties in life, she left and returned to her father’s home. Remington then went and wandered in the desert for several weeks, a kind of purging of the soul. After which, he returned to claim his wife and all his rightful responsibilities. Shortly after Remington’s arrival in New York, he solicited work with Harper’s Weekly using his portfolio of western sketches. He then set out to prove himself as an artist. It was during this time that Remington’s art career bloomed and developed into one of the most prolific artistes of his time. In his sketches he portrayed the subject matter that most captivated his interests; horses, military and the western frontier. And in return Remington made these interests the interests of the public. Remington thought this of his art work, “Cowboys are my cash.” The first of his attempts in sculpting was The Bronco Buster. In the public eye Remington is reputed to be America’s most popular nineteenth century Western artist. December 1909, at the apex of his career and the prime of his life Remington suddenly died from a ruptured appendix. Remington was a man who loved the vigours adventures of the outdoors; taking others with him on long trail rides, nature hikes, fishing and hunting trips. His work has and always will inspire this same love and appreciation in others, for the rustic life of the West and the great outdoors.
